PRSA Ethics Month with Rick Sorensen

As each of us strives to be an ethical communications professional, it is important to remember that integrity in practicing public relations goes beyond a generally ethical approach within each work day and stretches to the need for increasing awareness of the subtleties of real-life, down-in-the-weeds situations that can present ethical challenges for PR practitioners.
Join us on Sept. 22 when former IGT Public Relations Manager, Rick Sorensen, shares his perspective on the role of ethics in public relations, in conjunction with PRSA's Ethics Month. He will talk about his thoughts on the responsibilities PR practitioners have to themselves and the various audiences with whom they interact. He also will include real-life illustrations to provoke thought and encourage appropriate action when we are faced with professional ethical dilemmas.
Rick Sorensen spent 26 years in public relations with three different companies. His 20 years with IGT ended 20 months ago when he accepted a severance package from the company. He is not retired, although he sometimes acts like he is. Before his stint at IGT, Rick worked for five years at Harrah's Reno with entertainers ranging from B.B. King and Jay Leno to Luciano Pavarotti.
His first public relations job was with High Sierra Concerts in Reno. That lasted a year while he was earning his journalism degree at the University of Nevada. Among the performers he publicized were Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Van Halen and AC/DC.
He has also served for 13 years as a volunteer priest in the Episcopal Church -- preaching, celebrating Communion, and officiating at marriages and memorial services. For the last five years, he has been a volunteer facilitator for the Alternatives to Violence Project in three Nevada prisons. AVP is a 3-day experiential workshop that has proven to be transformational for the inmates, as well as for Rick.
